Stud Nursery – Kingston
Stud Nursery is situated in the grounds of Hampton Court, and is run with the support of Royal Historic Palaces and Kingston Mencap. Our service users enjoy gardening activities such as growing vegetables and herbs, potting plants, planting bulbs and developing gardens for the seasons. There is a woodwork room where the service users can make different projects, such as bird boxes, hedgehog houses and insect hotels. Service users take part in all aspects of the woodwork process and get involved in the cutting, sanding and painting of projects. We also run an arts and crafts session daily.
Around 40 adults with learning disabilities currently access Stud Nursery weekly, each attending between 1 – 3 days per week.
Stud Nursery holds open days throughout the year which enables the public, family and friends be able to purchase plants, shrubs and woodwork items, and provides an opportunity for people who work so hard at Stud Nursery all year round to show off their skills.
We also keep chickens at Stud Nursery, and welcomed them into their new home in March 2017. They are well settled now and part of the team at Stud Nursery. Our service users have enjoyed being involved with the daily care of the chickens.
We also introduced 5 Indian Runner ducks to Stud Nursery in May 2018, and they have made themselves very much at home splashing around in their custom made pond.

Balance was awarded the contract to run and further develop two successful projects in the London Borough of Richmond in April 2015, The Garden Gang and Green Power Recycling. These projects create employment and work experience opportunities for individuals with a learning disability.
Our Garden Gang is a dedicated team who work over several sites, offering services for garden maintenance, garden clearance and clearing of communal areas to residents in the Richmond and Kingston Boroughs. The team is made up of service users and support staff who offer a professional gardening and clearing service which including maintenance of plants and hanging baskets, mowing of lawns, weeding of flower beds, pruning of bushes and shrubs, sweeping paths, removal of garden waste and disposal of any green waste at a local waste recycling plant.
This team also provides a service to a local crematorium recycling floral tributes and green waste. The assistants dismantle the tributes and ensure waste is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
Green Power Recycling
The Green Power Recycling team provides a service to collect and sort textiles from the standard textiles and shoes banks from the Boroughs of Hounslow, Kingston and Hillingdon and transport them back to the loading container.
Both of these projects are working to support more people with a learning disability living in Richmond to progress onto paid employment.
