The workplace mediation service has grown out of our core business of supporting people experiencing difficulties in the work place. It complements Balance’s mission by promoting harmony in the workplace and sustainable employment.
Too many workplace conflicts end in disciplinary processes or legal battles. These take their financial toll in terms of management time and absence of the employee involved through sickness.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Mediation can provide an effective alternative. Mediation can reduce the pressures on management, the costs of dismissing an employee through disciplinary processes as well as increasing productivity through creating a more harmonious workplace.
What is mediation?
Mediation is an informal confidential process where both parties involved voluntarily sit down with an impartial mediator. Typically it takes place over the course of a single day. The morning is taken up with the mediator meeting each party to the dispute individually before bringing them together for the remainder of the mediation day.
The goal of mediation is for both parties to speak with each other in an open and honest manner to try to resolve the dispute in a manner that is acceptable to them both. Whatever is agreed during the mediation is decided by the parties involved rather than the mediator.

Profiles of our mediators
Having originally started her career working in HR, Karen has an understanding of how conflict within the workplace can escalate and impact negatively on an organisations’ costs and staff morale. Karen’s experience of supporting employers and employees with dispute resolution in both private and public sector organisations is complemented by her skills as a qualified counsellor. As a workplace counsellor Karen has gained a wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding of mental ill health issues which brings an important extra dimension to her work as a mediator.
Katie has a background in supported employment, and through her work as an Employment Consultant, has worked with a range of employers and employees to ensure that employment is sustained and the wellbeing of the employee is maintained. As an experienced line manager, Katie has developed skills and experience in addressing conflict and issues within the workplace.
